I figured that although writing a review of the Nikon COOLPIX P500 is long and boring but worthwhile nevertheless, listing the advantages as a ‘Top 10′ list is just way cooler. So please, take some time to browse through this list. I really think it saves time, rather than reading draggy reviews. And so, the top 10 reasons to get the Nikon COOLPIX P500 are:

1. Impressive Zoom Range – I can’t stress this point any more than I already have. Having a zoom of such diverse range (from 22.5mm up to 810mm) is simply put, extraordinary, and is reason enough to get the Nikon COOLPIX P500.

2. Wide Angle Lens – Although everybody talks about the zoom range, let’s not forget about the wide angle lens. From what I gathered, the same type of lens on a DSLR would cost just as much as this camera. Try and squeeze as many things in and you’d be surprised how much room you still have.

3. Travel Friendly – The lightweight characteristics, coupled with its ‘compact’ design, makes it perfect for travelling. And when I say ‘compact’, it does not necessarily mean small. Just means that it fits nicely in your hands.

4. Anti Shake Features – The Nikon COOLPIX P500 has up to 7 features that prevents blurred pictures due to shaking. I have mentioned some of these in my review, which you can find here. It may be somewhat of overkill, but hey, the more the merrier right? icon wink 10 Reasons to Own the Nikon COOLPIX P500 Now!

5. Image quality – Granted, not SLR quality but for a price way cheaper than a DSLR that produces about the same standard, the Nikon COOLPIX P500 is definitely a bargain! I have read about a user comparing it to his Nikon D5100 DSLR and his feedback was the image in the P500 was about 90% as good as the latter in terms of quality, but at just one-third the price. Nice!

If not, maybe the next few points might just convince you…..

6. Excellent User Interface – There are numerous direct controls available on the camera and the menu is relatively easy to navigate, without too many dropdowns. However, some terms used might seem alien if you are a novice just starting out in photography. It might take a while to get used to.

7. Low Light Capabilities – The Nikon COOLPIX P500 has the ability to capture the finest details, even in low light, maintaining a pretty decent image quality. I would not say the same for the video though. icon cool 10 Reasons to Own the Nikon COOLPIX P500 Now!

8. LCD Tilt – Large LCD screen which can be extracted out and tilted. Perfect for overhead shots too. Well, what more can you ask for? Surprisingly, not all users like it. You have been cautioned!

9. HD Video – Well, actually the only interesting feature in video mode is the slow-mo option, which can be activated by playing around with the frame speeds during recording. I have always been a fan of slow-motion. So, it would definitely be a plus to have. Other than that, there have been mixed reviews on users not that impressed with the quality. I will work on getting samples and you be the judge.

10. Battery Life – This point does not qualify to be in the ‘Top 10’ list, but I thought I would just go ahead and remind anyone interested to buy the Nikon COOLPIX P500 to get an additional battery and charger. There have been a number of complaints about its battery life, so I guess it’s better to be prepared. Unless you only use the camera as a substitute for your DSLR, I would suggest buying these accessories.

There you have it. Ten reasons to land yourself a Point-and-Shoot camera of diverse capabilities. I could write more, but let’s just leave that for another post. Also, I’m thinking of putting up some screenshots once I get my hands on some quality ones. So, do check back often for updates! icon wink 10 Reasons to Own the Nikon COOLPIX P500 Now!

Front Overview of the Nikon COOLPIX P500
The fact that you are here means that you are very keen on the Nikon COOLPIX P500 but just not really sure if it’s suitable for you right? Since its launch in early March2011, there have been many rave and a couple of rant reviews about it, including a few comparisons to its predecessor, the Nikon COOLPIX P100. I took the liberty to go through numerous reviews to make things a little easier for anyone who is on the fence about getting the Nikon COOLPIX P500.

Let’s review the specifications of the camera in question. First up, the main pulling factor attracting fans is definitely the 36X Optical Zoom lens, which allows ranges from its wide-angle starting point of 22.5mm (which is pretty wide actually) up to a telescopic level of 810mm! This will reveal stuff you could not even see with your bare eyes. This feature alone can give entry-level DSLRs a run for their money.

An interesting point to note is how well this works with the less popular Best Shot Selector mode. I mean, having an 810mm zoom results in a really long lens and the positioning of your hands might not be stable. So when taking a picture, try to maintain the lens with minimal movements while holding the shutter down. The Best Shot Selector mode will disregard the blurry shots and save the best one. Plus, having the hybrid Vibration Reduction, motion detection technology and the additional side zoom-controls further increase stability and eliminate shaky shots.

Is the Nikon COOLPIX P500 easy to handle?

Despite having a huge lens, its compact design and relatively light weight makes the Nikon COOLPIX P500 perfect for travelling around. It provides a tight grip and fits nicely in one’s hands, exactly what a point-and-shoot camera needs. Functions are easily accessed without the hassle of going through several dropdown menus.

Although you cannot expect much of a camera with tiny sensors, the image quality is surprisingly good. It does pretty well in low light conditions and excellent in good light. Definitely not DSLR quality but overall, for its price range, the images produced are of satisfactory levels. Maybe, a reduction from 12.1 to 8-9 megapixels would have been more suitable in producing even sharper images.

The Nikon COOLPIX P500 also comes with a Full HD 1080p video. There have also been mixed views on the video quality but it really depends on the user’s preferences. The zoom works well in video mode but not so smooth at times. You can also adjust the frame speeds while recording, which makes slow motion effects easily achievable. However, the quality is not as impressive when compared to other zoom competitors such as the Panasonic FZ100.

Nevertheless, among the downsides that were found in the Nikon COOLPIX P500 is probably its short span battery life. A couple of users suggested getting an external charger, which I’m not quite sure why didn’t Nikon include it in their stock. Another common issue raised is probably the amount of noise the zoom makes when shooting a video.

An average of 4 out of 5 users on Amazon had given the Nikon COOLPIX P500 above 4-stars rating, majority of which was 5-stars. It is currently available in 2 colors, black and red. Do not hesitate to leave your comments below. Click the link to get yourself a Nikon COOLPIX P500 today!
